Photos of Ardtornish Castle

Ardtornish Castle (6) by arjayempee

Ardtornish Castle's walls, which stand to height of 15ft or more and were 9ft thick, form an oblong some 56ft long by 29ft across. It may not look like an oblong, due to the distortion caused by stitching six photographs together - but it is! From up here, what is not obvious to passers-by on the Sound, becomes sadly obvious - that the fang of stonework containing the window opening from which the Lords of the Isles might reasonably be expected to have once stared out towards the Isle of Mull, is entirely of 20th century construction. The evident use of concrete is a dead give-away that this was no 'proper' restoration. The floor of the ground floor must have been some way below what we see here, the basement now being choked with masonry fallen from above. A great place to spend a midgeless summer night out - or is that a contradiction in terms?
