The Cambrian Inn. The inn was originally built in 1809 and was a hotbed of radicalism and early trade unionism. A "Union Club" of miners was founded at the inn in 1831, members vowing not to teach their trade to strangers without the permission of the club. In 1832 the iron masters threatened to close the iron works down if the Union Club were not disbanded. The workers were defeated in a seven week strike and this led to the resurgence of the Scotch Cattle movement, bent on achieving the aims of the Union Club and other lodges through violence and intimidation. In 1834, following the transportation of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, the iron masters succeeded in destroying the Union, driving trade unionism underground. The future Chartist leader Zephaniah Williams was a popular speaker at the inn, lecturing on mining, underground ventilation and reform.
