The name of Hill hath been of great antiquity^ worthy and dis-tinction in the counties of Staffbrd and Devon ;^ and, from thereign of Queen Elizabeth, of considerable note and esteem in thecounties of Downe and Antrim. MoYSES Hill, Esq. the ancestor of the present Earl of Hills-borough, was, during the course of ONeiles rebellion in theNorth, one of those gentlemen who (in 1573), were associatedunder Walter Devereux, Earl of Essex, to suppress itj and, afterthe fatal disappointment and death of that Earl, served under hisson, Robert Earl of Essex, who, March 12th, 15gs, was appointedL.
