May 1920: Torpedo boat destroyer HMAS YARRA [I] in Port Phillip Bay - Allan C. Green [1878-1954], SL by Kookaburra2011

6145: The 700 ton early RAN River Class torpedo boat destroyer HMAS YARRA [I] is seen again in her WWI black colours, also, we think on or around May 28, 1920, when the RAN's one and only royal review was conducted in Port Phillip Bay in honour of the visiting Prince of Wales, Prince Edward, the future Kinbg Edward VIII and Duke of Windsor after his abdication [see preceding entries]. There is a lot of busy activity on the deck in this image - and a man up in the crow's nest. NOTE: We discover that we had a scan quality version of this image at Pic NO. 551 from Ross Gillett's book 'Australian and New Zealand Warships 1914-1945' [Doubleday, Sydney 1983], where it is credited to Peter Britz, dated 1919 and the ship's return to Sydney. We have not yet resolved this contradiction, but presently feel the industrial shoreline to the left here looks like Newport, and distant mountains to the right look like the Macedon Ranges: hence we now favour Green and Port Phillip Bay. This digitalized version from a plate glass negative also looks more 'original,' although either photographer may have collected images of the other. Photo: Allan C. Green [1878-1954], Green Collection, State Library of Victoria [La Trobe Library] accession NO. H91.250/1354, publicly released.
