The Transporter Bridge in Newport seen from the Liswerry (East). The bridge is one of only two working transporter bridges in the UK (the other is in Middlesbrough) and six in the world. Vehicles and passengers are carried across on a platform suspended from the frame of the bridge. This allowed unimpeded access for ships on the River Usk and gave access between Liswerry and Pilgwenlly without needing to divert via the town bridge upstream.
The bridge was built between 1902 and 1906 to the design of Ferdinand Arnodin (who had built the first ever transporter bridge, in Spain) and the borough engineer Robert Haynes. It cost £98,000 and was opened on September 12 1906 by Lord Tredegar.
